Animal Experimentation
Do animals retain the same inalienable rights as human beings? Many consumers do not realize that animals are forced to be a part of tests for
future products. Before corporations introduce goods into the market place, they must assure they provide safe, hazard-free products to the everyday shopper. Medical advances, beauty products, and other tests are only some of the inventions imposed upon the creatures without their consent. Pets, such as cats, dogs, mice, and rabbits, experience harsh, lonely conditions, which alter their entire livelihood. Within the laboratories, experimenters order the tests upon the various species in order to coincide with the belief that companies to conduct their research on animals instead of humans. Today, so much focus has been placed of humans’ rights and the developments of equality. The next step of Progressivism is the protection of animals’ rights. In order to limit, continue, or expand experiments on living things, Progressives must explore the manner in which laboratories practice on the animals, why animals are tested upon and the ethical questions surrounding the testing, and the current, as well as future, government action halting further experiments.
Human beings believe that their superior intellect elevates them above all other living creatures. Some debate whether or not people’s lack of physical capabilities—as compared to most beasts’—should lessen the power gap which currently exists. With the number of
developments and discoveries of unknown diseases, researchers turned their attention to the genetic makeup of other species and their relations to the human race. Instead of practicing new medical techniques, including: procedures, vaccinations, medicines, etc., scientists choose to investigate through the use of animals. According to a Santa Clara University study, “About 20 million animals are experimented on and killed annually, three-fourths for medical purposes and the rest to test various products. An estimated eight million are used in painful experiments;”researchers used animals as substitutes for humans in the experimental group.
Researchers alter the types of tests according to the subjects and items being experimented on. Depending on the research, laboratories impose injections; apply makeup, and so on to discover the array of possible results. Based on the current rules of the Food and Drug Administration and other government regulations, laboratories do not have to release information on the number of animals undergoing tests. In order to minimize the risk to animals, the government must introduce new laws and a committee to oversee the laboratories’ practices.
