Food and Politics
Where does food come from?
Every day family members embark on shopping trips to local grocery
stores, which the employees stock piles with loads of fresh produce.
Even though out-of-season fruit and vegetables appear each day, rarely do
consumers question the mass availability of the food. Not only do shoppers
ignore the constant convenience, but fail to recognize the inhumane actions
taken to allow access to the fruits, vegetables and meats.
Politicians must take action to halt the farmers’ abuse of their
livestock by limiting their living space, time outdoors, and inducing growth
hormones into the cows.
People should hold the same elevated expectations of food safety to that
of the animals. When an individual
purchases a good from a store, he or she anticipates the quality of the meat,
fruit, vegetable, baked good, etc.
Typically, the shopper fails to comprehend the animals’ living
conditions, which provide the meat for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
In the documentary, “Food Inc,” the producers exemplified the cruel,
brutish and short lives of cows.
For instance, the footage displayed hundreds of cows in a dark, contained
area. Lined up shoulder to
shoulder, the cows could hardly move amongst the knee deep manure.
The building not only housed hundreds of uncomfortable cows, but limited
the air movement and sunlight.
Throughout the clip, one noticed the lack of fans, windows, and ability
to freely move about. When the
farmers release the cows to graze outside, bulldozers roll the stationary,
immobile cows. Aside from the
physical restraints, farmers implement a growth hormone tract upon the
livestock. To this day, much
remains undiscovered about the effects of hormonal injections on the animals and
the meat consumed by the human population. Traditionally, government agencies
viewed the importance of the agricultural industry and profit margins for
economic growth above that of consumer health and animal rights.
Even though the Food and Drug Administration has taken steps to control
the technological innovations influencing animal reproduction and growth,
politicians override the agency and attempt to gain farmers’ votes through the
support of their practices.
Looking forward, shoppers decide the fate of animal rights and their
influence on politicians’ actions to further prevent the abuse; as well as
maintaining the health and quality of the consumed
meats.
